I am at the ASTD conference in San Diego. Just heard the legendary Peter Block speak. Here are a couple great quotes from his session:
"Leadership is the capacity to initiate a future distinct from the past."
"The core task of leadership is to create community."
What we normally call problems (low performance, high costs, poor morale, unsafe streets, poor health care) are really symptoms of the breakdown of community."
Peter Block has a new book out called Community: The Structure of Belonging.

Lisa,
I love the comments about leadership and community. This is becoming the age of conversation and community or should I say it always has been but we are really starting to notice and act upon it. I will look for Peter's new book. Thanks for letting us know about this.

I am totally on fire about Peter Block's new book! How cool that you heard him speak, Lisa! I emailed him on Saturday, and he emailed me back - he must have done it from the ASTD conference!
I'm almost done creating a 10-week study guide for this new book - anyone interested in a virtual master mind studying it? It is HIGHLY recommended for anyone who wants to transform - not change - a community, whether that be a business, a family, a city council, etc.
Thanks, Lisa, for putting it out there!

David and Jodee - Glad you connect with Block's work. This was the second time I have seen him speak and he gets better each time.

Hey this is great timing. I am actually in the process of doing a 3 part series on Trait-Based Leadership VS. Situation-Based Leadership followed up by a research survey. If you are interested, you should have a look: hr-worldview.blogspot.com
cheers!
