I have a Lead Well newsletter (you can subscribe here) going out this morning with the theme of building relationships. As part of the newsletter, I offered an excerpt from Connecting Top Managers (my recent book about leadership team excellence) from the chapter called, "They are All Moments of Truth." If you would like to download the excerpt, you can get it here. Tell me what you think!
Also, I will be hitting the following cities in the near future. Let me know if you are interested in doing a one hour book talk with a group of your managers (or something else!).
- Orlando, FL
- Ft. Myers, FL
- Chicago, IL
- Atlanta, GA
- Columbus, OH
- Cleveland, OH
- Kuala Lumpur
- Washington, DC
The idea of the moment of truth (yes, there is a hat tip and nod to the original book from Jan Carlzon in the chapter) is critical for all managers and leaders. Our reputations are built on observations made by employees during what might be tiny snippets of time - like passing someone in a hallway. This may not seem fair on those days when our minds are deep into solving a tough problem and we don't take the time to look up and acknowledge someone, but leadership is a social act. How we stroll through our plants, how we engage folks in the parking lot, and whether we look them in the eye with genuine interest matters. It all matters and it is a burden and a privilege. A burden because we are always "on" and a privilege because we can and do change lives. Great leaders build deep connections fast and they treat every moment as one that will define their reputation and legacy.
