I find myself worrying about hurricane Irene. I don't live in its projected path, my worry is for those that will be inevitably affected. I takes a village to build and it will take an even bigger village to help rebuild. Whatever the impacts - people, property, communications, transportation, pride, businesses and jobs - we will need to pull together even if we are not directly affected.
I have no doubt that we will.
This kind of togetherness (together toward a goal) is what our organizations need every day. I love this line from a comment from David on a recent post. He wrote, "The purpose of any organization is to accomplish as a group what we cannot accomplish as individuals." Yes, the REASON organizations exist is to be great together in the service of goals. Our organizations require our full collaborative effort every day.
And so, too, will our friends and colleagues along the east coast. The skills we bring to the fore during a disaster are the same ones that catapult our organization's effectiveness forward.

When I made the comment I had not thought of it in the context of disaster relief, but it certainly does apply as you point out. Thanks for quoting!
I remember a couple of years ago there was going to be some really bad Category 4 storm hitting the US coast somewhere, hyped and hyped for days, and then all it did was rain and no damage was caused. They don't always know, and we won't know until we know.
